Peterborough 1-3 Man United XI : Report

Owen Hargreaves finally made his debut for United as the Reds won 3-1 against 4th division team Peterborough which is managed by Sir Alex's own son, Darren Ferguson.

"There was a bit of confusion because we thought Fletcher and Silvestre were coming down to play," said Ferguson junior, Darren.

"Hargreaves, Pique, Lee Martin and others were out there, though. They've got quality throughout the squad. It wasn't an overly competitive game but thoroughly enjoyable. It was a good day for the whole family."

Adam Eckerley opened the scoring with an angled drive after 23 minutes to give the Red Devils the lead. Peterborough equalised in the 49th minute through Rene Howe.

Richie Jones made it 2-1 after a Dong Fangzhuo shot was parried in the 72nd minute and Fangzhuo himself found the back of the net five minutes later with a stunning goal, performing a skillful manoeuvre in the box and firing the ball in.

The next match is now against Chelsea.

Sir Alex expects exciting tie

After losing at the new Wembley, Sir Alex is keen to see a better game tomorrow against Chelsea.

"I think it will be a better game,” said the boss. “There was tiredness in both teams in the cup final. I know that I couldn't get any more out of my players. They'd done a fantastic job for us, virtually the same players every week from the beginning of April.

“But the other thing was that the pitch was a bit dead. Being a new pitch, that was a problem. There had been a lot of rain during the week and then the sun came at the weekend and it just deadened the pitch. The speed of it wasn't great. I know the groundsman and he'll work to make sure it's a good pitch eventually. Sometimes it takes time to settle down. If it's a better pitch then it'll be a better game.”

Hargreaves will be a great addition

Manchester United player Wayne Rooney says that new signing Owen Hargreaves will be a great player for Manchester United. Owen hasn't played a game and is unlikely to play against Chelsea because of a knee problem.

“Playing with Owen is brilliant,” said Rooney in the Daily Mirror.

“He runs all over the pitch and links up the play. He’s so unselfish, one of those players that people don’t always see what he does for the team.

“He’s a really strong person too. He took criticism from the England fans at the world cup but he just kept on and he was our best player in the end.

“He’ll be a great addition and I think he can link well with Michael Carrick. Michael can get forward more, while Owen likes to win the ball and pass it."

Other new signings Nani, Anderson have already made their debuts.
